Types of Pipe Supports
There are three main types of pipe supports rigid supports, spring supports, and snubbers or shock absorbers.
- Rigid supports- rigid supports are used to restrict the pipe from certain directions without flexibility.
- Spring supports- supports that provide continuous support during the expansion or contractions of the pipe.
- Snubbers/ shock absorbers- act as a restraint for the pipe while allowing pipe movement in either a tension or compression mode.
Pipe supports are fabricated from various types of materials. Materials may include structural steel, carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, and FRP composites. Many supports are coated to protect against elements such as moisture and corrosion.
The first pipe supports were introduced to the industrial realm in the early 1950s and 1960s. In the year 1984, the first of many thermoplastic pipe support hangers were invented. They were invented to develop a more versatile and domestic manufactured support line. The improved piping materials improved the performance of the supports, allowing the supports to be used both inside and outside buildings.
When a business is using a pipe support system, it is important that the hangers or supports are spaced correctly. Too much of a space between the supports may add stress to the system, which in turn causes the system to deflect and sag. Too little of space will incur many unnecessary expenses in supplies. When determining the support spacing, it is important to follow all installation specifications. Each specification will affect how smooth the installation process will be. Specifications include the piping diameters, temperature parameters, weight, locations. It is also important to include lateral crosses for stability when installing a support system. The taller the support, the more stability it will need.
Pipe hangers and supports are designed to allow function between the piping system without the risk of damage or excess supplies. It is important to ensure that the installation is correct by making sure the number and spacing of the supports or hangers are adequate for the loads they will bear.
